Milecastle 37

Featured Location Guide

The nearly complete northern gate arch

Has a nearly complete arch allowing height to be calculated. It is located on Housesteads Crags about half a mile  to the west of Housesteads Roman Fort and Museum.  Between Housesteads fort and this milecastle, is one of the few stretches of wall that has a path running along the top.

The milecastle from the west looking east, Housesteads fort is just beyond the trees on the left

From the same point at the photo above looking west

On the way back to Housesteads just before reaching the point
where you can climb onto the wall, looking west

From the end of the section of wall that you can walk on looking west

The wall height varies, this is a section back towards Housesteads and you can also see
the optional path to the south of the wall if you don't want to walk on the wall.

The way ahead blocked, to collect revenue.

The way ahead above is blocked now, you used to be able to walk through here, this is so that you can no longer walk into the fort, you have to go down the slope, pay for entry and then climb the hill again. Or like many others you can just climb over one of the fort walls.

This is particularly annoying when you, like most others visiting this milecastle and wall top walk, have visited the fort as they make you go back down through the pay area, to climb the hill to make this trip and the reverse on return.

There are also steps down to the left, allowing you to walk along the wall past the fort to the north of the fort.

Looking west Housesteads is behind left and milecastle 37
can be seen on the high ground beyond the wood.

Looking west, but this time with Housesteads Roman Fort also shown.

Getting there: Along the wall from Housesteads Roman Fort and Museum. As people have to pay to go into the fort its difficult to get from the fort onto the wall directly, so you have to go out of the entry point of the fort and around to the west walking up the western wall of the fort. Some people however just climb over a part of the fort remains.

You can reach the milecastle from the car park at Housesteads without going through the entry.

Access: Access from the path that runs along the wall.

Notes: Care needs to be taken when walking along the wall top, it is wide, but to the north there is a very long drop down the crags. Another path runs next to the wall to the south so those who don't want to walk on the wall can avoid it.
