Charlton Kings Ford

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Location Guide

Cheltenham is said to be the centre of the Cotswolds, and like many towns today is made up of a number of what were smaller villages and surrounding communities. Its probably best known for it's spa town status and its fantastic Georgian buildings, however hidden in one of the smaller communities, Charlton Kings, there is a Ford, where the road crosses the point where a tributary, the Lilly Brook, joins the River Chelt.

You can drive down the road, although the signs at the top, where School Road joins Lyefield Road East, do not say there is a Ford ahead, but does warn it is not suitable for vehicles accept for access. If you decide to drive down to it you will then have to go through the Ford and exit School Road at the end it joins London Road, on the busy A40. Your best bet is to park in Lyefield Road East, there are no parking restrictions or parking charges on this road and then to walk down to it. However it's worth pointing out that if you decide to walk down School Road and follow the road, which you can, it is down hill, not steep as the road meanders it's way down to the ford position before rising up a steeply inclined hill the other side of it. Another way to access it on foot is to follow the signed footpath between some houses at Lyefield Close. This is a more direct route and not as steep as the road, when you get to the point you need to cross the river there is a footbridge across it.

The ford is very sheltered with trees overhanging and houses on on both sides, so gets very little sun. From a photographic perspective you will need to be aware of this. However if you make the effort to go and take a look, there will be water in it and if you are there long enough you may get a car or two go through it, but it is not a busy road and is really only known by the local community.

Picture right is of footpath end where it comes out into Lyefield Road East referred to above.
